Allograft vs. Autograft

Allograft

We use two types of stem cells, autograft and allograft. Autograft stem cell is taken directly from the patient. Autograft is the safest stem cell to use, and also heals the quickest. However, when using autograft stem cell, a second incision must be made, which patients will also need to recover from.

The second option is allograft stem cell, which is taken from another person. Allograft stem cell has the benefit of not requiring a secondary surgical site, which could potentially mean a quicker recovery time. Also, unlike organs, allograft transplants are not “rejected” by the patient’s body so we do not need to use drugs in order to suppress your body’s immune response. However, allograft stem cell transplants take longer to incorporate into the patient’s body.
