Mehrdad M Malek, M.D.

Mehrdad M Malek, M.D., F.A.C.S. is an orthopaedic surgeon, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a past president of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He is the founder and president of the National Knee Research and Education Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to research, teaching and education. A world-renowned pioneer in the advancement of arthroscopy and arthroscopic surgery, he is an accomplished author of three text books and 18 chapters in various orthopaedic text books. In addition, he is a frequently requested speaker both nationally and internationally and a 1993 John Joyce Award recipient, a prestigious award presented by the International Arthroscopy Association for outstanding scientific research and presentation (Copenhagen, Denmark).

He has visited and lectured in Australia, Bahamas, Brazil, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Sweden, Venezuela and is expected to visit and lecture in China this year. Dr. Malek’s knowledge and expertise in the field of orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine and regenerative orthopaedics includes treatment, repair and reconstruction of complicated knee conditions and he has performed over 12000 knee surgeries in his practice since inception. Over the last few years, he has concentrated his efforts, practice and research into regenerative orthopaedics and the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Viscosupplementation and Stem Cell Therapy in arthritic conditions of major joints in musculoskeletal systems.

As a part of his dedication to teaching and education, he stablished a national symposium and seminar concentrated in arthroscopy, arthroplasty and regenerative medicine in 1982 and this past year the seminar celebrated its 36th consecutive year of teaching and education for orthopaedic surgeons, fellows and residents as well as allied health professionals.

Since its inception over 5000 orthopaedic surgeons, fellows, residents and allied health professionals have attended the seminar and this meeting now is the longest running consecutive arthroscopy and arthroplasty seminar in the world.

From 2006-2007 he served as Director of the orthopaedic residency program for the Inova Fairfax Hospital, a member of the Inova health system.

He has been named as one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the country by the Consumer Research Council of America in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2015, 2017.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American College of Surgeons (ASC) and a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) and American Academy of Antiaging Medicine (A4M).
