Stem Cell Therapy

To the general public, stem cell therapy is relatively new and innovative treatment. However, stem cell therapy has been around for quite some time in various forms. In the past, stem cells were much more difficult and expensive to obtain, putting this treatment out of reach for many patients who could benefit from it. Thankfully, advances in medical technology and techniques have made it easier to obtain stem cells so that we can offer stem cell therapy to more patients.

The Stem Cell Clinic of Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, California is a leading stem cell therapy clinic in the country, led by renowned orthopedic surgeon Mehrdad M Malek, M.D.

Autologous Stem Cells Are Generated By Your Body

Stem cells can be thought of as your body’s repairmen. There are different versions of stem cells, but the most common type is the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC). For years, hematopoietic stem cells were viewed as not very important. Over the years, we’ve come to realize that these cells are actually crucial to the tissue regeneration process, and they do not diminish as you age.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are also associated with tissue healing. MSC travels through the bloodstream to the injured area of the body. While the MSC is a very important stem cell, it is not as important as it once was. It prepares the area for other stem cells to perform their function.

How We Collect Stem Cells

We obtain stem cells through a suction technique from bone marrow in the back of the pelvis or fatty tissue from around your waist. We use a tiny needle to remove the substance, and the patient is given local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.

We store the extracted substance in a special container, and use a machine called a centrifuge to separate the stem cells from the other material. This separated material, called bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is what is used for stem cell therapy.

Stem Cell Repair Process

The repair process for stem cell therapy can take between two to three months to complete. However, most patients start to experience improvements sooner. Approximately one to two months following your stem cell injection, we administer a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to the area, followed by another injection four to six months later. These injections allow the stem cells to continue to grow and develop into cartilage tissue.

Your recovery can be affected by a variety of factors. We advise patients to minimize their alcohol consumption while receiving stem cell and PRP treatment because alcohol may disrupt your body’s ability to release stem cells. However, certain supplements can stimulate stem cell production, including:

  • Carnosine
  • Blueberry extract
  • Vitamin D3
  • Green tea extract
  • Omega-3
